Sophia is a great, evolving heavenly being known throughout the centuries of human spiritual wisdom as the one who stands between humanity and the Dragon. From ancient Chaldean Mysteries (2100 BC), we learn that these people understood that Tiamat, the Being of the Night, underwent a great change. A great darkness began to coalesce in the spiritual world, obscuring this world from human clairvoyant sight. As the Darkness increased and demonic forms began to emerge, which gradually created the mighty, fire-breathing Dragon. This was the Kaliyuga, the Age of Darkness (3101 BC to 1899 AD).
To save humanity, the Heavenly Sophia conceived and ‘gave birth to her Son’, Murdak, known to us through Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual science as Michael, the reigning Archangel who is now the further evolved leading Time Spirit of our age. Sophia sent her Son to the Earth to fight the Dragon. This he does and then overcomes this dark being to create Heaven and Earth from its body. This ‘Heaven and Earth’ is the school of evolution for Human beings to develop and evolve, learning wonder, compassion (love), and to develop conscience.
| From Rudolf Steiner, we learn that Sophia is an evolving Heavenly Being who, at the time of the Chaldean Mysteries, was composed of five sets of hierarchic beings, beginning with the highest Beings, the Spirits of Wisdom, down through the Spirits of Movement, the Spirits of Form, the Archai, and the Archangels as shown in this painting. Michael was one of the Archangels at that time. Diane Roman-Goldsberry |
This painting shows the five initial hierarchies and Michael, who stands between the Dragon, now encased in the mineral world, and the growing human being. Our Earth school and our physical bodies are the foundation from which we can evolve and grow into the spiritual world. Since the Mystery of Golgotha, with the help of the Christ, we are able to begin the process of incorporating our Spirit Self, the first member of our Higher Self.
The Heavenly Sophia continues to evolve with us and is the wise mediator between the Christ Impulse and us.
