RCARA Laboratory
The RCARA has received preliminary assistance from a Doctor of Chemistry in the College Station area of Texas. We have observed the making of red pigment form Rose Madder roots that are commercially available for purchase.
One of the questions that we would like to solve is "Why are the commercially available red pigmented paints showing a brownish color?"
We have been advised that the outer layer of the root must be scraped away before processing the root into a pigment. The commercially available roots are dried with this layer intact. It is rather difficult to remove this layer once the roots are dried. It is clear that we must have our own sources of fresh roots to achieve the quality of color that we are seeking.
